The Carpathians hold Europe's last great wilderness - a landscape where bison, wolves, and
human lives have been braided together for centuries. Wild nature survives here not despite
people, but because generations made room for it. True conservation depends on this deep
coexistence: the same forests that shelter wildlife shelter local livelihoods, proving that
nature cannot be protected by excluding the communities who share it.
This harmony is the core of WeWilder, a WWF initiative in Armeniș, at the foothills of the
Țarcu Mountains, in the Carpathians. Operating on the truth that lasting nature requires
thriving communities, WeWilder puts stewardship directly into local hands. Locals are
trained as rangers, tracking guides, and hosts, while a local farming cooperative keeps
traditional agriculture vibrant alongside wild spaces. Conservation becomes something the
community actively owns, defends, and benefits from.
The reintroduction of free-roaming bison in 2014 restored both a keystone species and a
human ecosystem. Today, over 250 bison roam free, while eco-tourism, retreats, and local
crafts prove that human prosperity and wild nature can flourish together. By honoring humans
as an essential part of the landscape, economic growth actively regenerates the environment.
Through this limited edition, Carpathian supports WeWilder by WWF - backing the mountains'
traditional guardians so that what is wild stays wild.
